Our climb of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with the Bridges of Peace and Hope team was a success. We reached the summit at 19,340 an hour after sunrise on June 28. We unfurled the “High Hopes and Common Threads” banner that included photos of more than 1700 students from 50 plus countries. The children in the photos were holding up words they had written that expressed their hopes, beliefs, and cares.
The climb and project included the first phase of fundraising to help the Mukwashi Trust School in Lusaka, Zambia. Mukwashi Trust School is a wonderful Pre-K to Grade 9 school that is providing an excellent educational experience for over 300 local boys and girls. The school needs our support to continue the good work they are doing. Before the climb we had a goal of raising $19,340, one dollar for each of the 19,340 feet to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We ended up falling short of the fundraising goal but we did all reach the summit, and we receive over $9,000 in donations. The funds are being used to begin the process of building a high school for the children within the commnity. Currently, less than 50% of the children in the area attend any school. Fewer than 20% of those who do graduate from Grade 9 are able to go on to high school. There are more than 40 primary schools in the area and only one high school. Some of the students who are fortunate enough to be able to attend high school have to move away to attend schools as far away as three to six hours from home.
We will be inviting classrooms, schools and individuals to join us as we strive to make this dream of a high school come true. Any donation of any amount is sincerely appreciated.
